Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is it too late to learn to swim? Not at all! Children and adults can learn to swim at any age. For young children, lessons build confidence and safety skills gradually. For adults, we focus on comfort and confidence first, so even if you’ve never learned before, you can progress safely at your own pace.

2. What if I or my child are nervous in the water? Feeling nervous is completely normal! Our instructors are experienced in helping children (from age 3) and adults overcome fear. We take things step by step, focusing on comfort and safety before any strokes, so learners feel confident and supported at every stage.

3. What happens in the first lesson? The first lesson is about getting comfortable in the water. For children aged 3 and up, this may include playful water games, basic floating, push and glides with kicking and blowing bubbles. For adults, it focuses on floating, gentle push and glide exercises, and simple kicking on their front and Back. Everyone progresses at their own pace so you may work on more than this within the first lesson.

4. How long will it take before my child or I can swim confidently or reach a higher level? The timeline depends on your goals. If your aim is simply to feel confident and safe in the water, progress can be achieved relatively quickly. For children (aged 3+) or adults aiming to reach a club-ready standard or master all strokes, it may take longer, as lessons focus on building technique, strength, and water skills step by step. We always tailor the pace to each learner, so you or your child can reach your personal goal safely and confidently.

5. Do children or adults need to be fit to start lessons? Not at all! Swimming is gentle on the body and suitable for all fitness levels. Lessons are tailored to the individual’s abilities, whether your child is aged 3+ and learning basic skills or you’re an adult building water confidence. Over time, regular swimming will also help improve strength, endurance, and overall fitness while building confidence and technique.

6. Can we have 1:1 lessons for extra support? Yes! At Scott Swim, we mainly offer private 1:1 sessions, which are ideal for children (aged 3+) or adults who need extra attention. Our instructors tailor each lesson to the individual’s needs, helping learners progress safely and confidently while addressing any fear or difficulty in the water. One-on-one lessons are the fastest way to build comfort, confidence, and skill. While we still offer other Lesson ratios if you are looking for that.

7. What happens if a lesson is missed? We understand that life happens! Scott Swim offers catch-up lessons for children (aged 3+) and adults, but these must be requested with at least 48 hours’ notice. If notice is given after this time, it counts as a late cancellation which no catchup will be provided. Catch-up lessons can be easily booked through our online portal, ensuring that missed sessions don’t slow down progress while keeping the process convenient for families and adult learners.

8. How does the payment work for lessons? When you start with Scott Swim, the first lesson is an assessment lesson. This helps you or your child (aged 3+) decide if you’re happy with the venue and instructor before committing to further lessons. After the assessment, you have the right to stop without any commitment. If you’re happy to continue, you pay for the rest of the month and then move onto our monthly payment plan. Our pricing takes into account lessons throughout the year, including 5-week months and scheduled holidays, so the monthly fee remains consistent and predictable. Prices for lessons can be found on our About page.

9. Can families combine adult and child lessons? Yes! Families can book lessons for children (aged 3+) and adults together in 2:1 up to 4:1 ratios. However, please note that when there is a large age or skill gap, progress can be slower compared to private 1:1 lessons, as instructors must balance differing abilities. For learners who want faster, more tailored progress, 1:1 lessons are usually the most effective option.

10. How do we get started? Getting started is easy! You can view our live availability and request lesson slots directly via our booking page. Once you request a slot, we will be in touch regarding your next steps. If you have any particular questions or need more information before booking, you can submit them through our enquiry form, and one of our friendly team members will get back to you promptly.
